May 12, 2013 Solemnity of the Ascension : Heaven, not place but a dimension

The Holy Mass in honor of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord was concelebrated by our chaplain, Father Jun Sescon and Father Emmanuel “ Nono” Alfonso, SJ on May 12, 2013, 12:00 noon at the Sto. Niño de Paz Greenbelt Chapel. Mothers’ Day and the 47^th World Communications Sunday were also celebrated during that day.

At the beginning of Father Nono’s homily, he asked both adults and children where they think heaven was. In his homily, he shared that the key to understanding the mystery of the Ascension was to see heaven not as a place but rather as a dimension where there is full participation in the life of God; union with the Father and the Son; fullness of life and accessibility to all through grace of the Holy Spirit whom Jesus and the Father send to us. He went on to emphasize that as the Lord’s prayer is uttered, people praying implore the Lord’s Kingdom to come and His will be done. By this heaven and earth is reconciled, uniting and reconciling God and Man; that whenever Man exercises his humanity by acting in accordance to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit, to do the will of the Father, all is transcended.

Suffering and trials, for the sake of the Gospel, are considered by one as pure joy and an experience of God’s divine love.

Jesus rules the world at the right hand of the Father, blessing us with the Holy Spirit as we implore His presence to fill our hearts and minds with His guidance and help.

Blessing of Mothers

Father Nono described his own Mother, to the greenbelt chapel parishioners, as a re-uniter and reconciler; one who gathers and unites their family to God and one another.

Blessing of Mothers was done after Holy Communion and green colored fans, bearing the image of the Madonna embracing her peaceful and serene Child Jesus, at the center, were given to all Mothers present. It was a hot noonday but the heat of God’s love radiates from heaven to earth.

Cervical cancer awareness was done by the chapel grounds.

World Communications Sunday

This year, the papal message, drawn up and released in January by Benedict XVI, focuses on the importance of social networking sites as “portals of truth and faith”, and “new spaces for evangelization.”¹ Prior to said Mass, a talk was given by Father Lucas last Wednesday May 8, where he shared the importance of social networking in the new evangelization. Creativity and imagination is needed to give God a sacred space in our dealings with one another, share Him/His Word with others and glorify the Lord with joy and gladness. By: Michele L. Mariquit
